Image Gallery Viruses


General Information

Electron microscopy is the technique of first choice to visualize viruses. In routine diagnostic transmission electron microscopy (TEM) is preferably used. This technique makes recognition of characteristic structures of a virus possible and allows allocation to a virus family or even genus according to the viral taxonomy. The viruses presented in this image gallery have been associated to virus families according to the virus taxonomy of the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses (ICTV, https://talk.ictvonline.org).

This Image Gallery Viruses should help the user to identify viruses of predominantly animal origin.

 

Technique of preparation

For investigation of samples in electron microscopy (TEM) the technique of negative contrasting is used according to Rubbenstroth et al. (2019).

The image legends contain the following information in German (translations of the technical terms are given below):

  • Genus name of the virus, animal species, specimen, magninification
    e.g. Adenovirus, Schwein, Kot, 200000x
